Everything you need is here

In this fast-paced world, we understand that time is money, which is why we’ll cut right to the chase. We’re here to learn how to better recognize scams—and why it’s so important. The 2024 Global State of Scams report revealed that scams are costing consumers over $1 trillion globally, with devastating financial, emotional, and social consequences—and the year isn’t over yet (1).

In the U.S., the FTC reported $10 billion lost in 2023 alone due to fraud (2). Alarmingly, the United States accounts for 47% of the world’s phishing and scam registrations (3).

There’s no way for us to learn every trick attackers use, but the goal of this course is to help you understand what phishing attackers are trying to achieve, see examples of how they’ve succeeded in the past, and learn how they can use the information you share—whether it’s a click on a link sent via text or email, or details shared during a phone call that seems legitimate. These attacks can target you through your personal or work computer, phone, or even advanced methods like deepfake and AI-based voice cloning scams.

Relying solely on installed antivirus or anti-malware solutions may not be enough to protect you. In today’s world, a phishing phone call using AI-cloned voices or a spoofed number impersonating internal tech support, or even a single web link opened by one team member in a large corporation, can lead to scenarios carefully crafted by scammers, resulting in significant financial or data losses.

Scammers are constantly innovating with new approaches, and while it’s impossible to know every trick they may come up with, understanding their goals and past tactics is crucial. By adopting a zero-trust approach and learning to recognize red flags, you can better protect yourself and your organization. In martial arts, this is akin to building muscle memory—reacting instinctively to threats through training and preparation.

We’ll dive into real-world examples and strategies to help you identify and avoid these traps. Let’s begin.
